Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles begins production of the ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo at its factory in Hannover, Germany, making it the third German production site for the automaker’s ID. Family of battery electric vehicles. Deliveries to customers are to begin in the fall.

“The Identity. Buzz is an important step in the electrification of the brand and the factory in Hannover,” says Josef Baumert, member of the VWCV brand management board for production and logistics, in a press release. “In just eight years, more than 55% of our vehicles in Europe will be equipped with battery-electric propulsion. Identity. Buzz has a leading strategic role in this respect.”

The VW division produces three models at the Hanover plant. They are based on three different platforms and can have three different readers: the ID. Buzz BEV, the new Multivan as a plug-in hybrid and conventionally powered, and variants of the T6.1 Transporter van with combustion engine. The vehicles are partly produced on a single line.

VWCV expects to produce approximately 15,000 IDs. Buzz, ID. Buzz Cargo, Multivan and T6.1 this year and will eventually build up to 130,000 units per year in Hannover. The automaker aims to build 900 vehicles a day by 2023, up from the previous maximum of 810.

“Our production method is very complex, but it allows us to respond flexibly to customer demand,” says Baumert. Despite numerous factory modifications over the past two years, production of the T6.1 has continued uninterrupted.

When starting the ID. Buzz, the 4,000 employees at the Hanover plant have been trained to produce the new vehicles. “We trained our employees in high-voltage technology and also adapted our learning to new tasks,” he explains.

“The workforce has done an excellent job during this time: they have undergone training for the ID. Buzz alongside the serial production of the T6.1 and the new Multivan – and all this during the COVID pandemic -19,” says Baumert.

The Hanover plant has new equipment and processes; the degree of automation of the body of the ID. Buzz increased to 92% vs. 77% for Q6.1. Skilled workers run large parts of the factories using computers and mobile devices such as smartwatches. Operators and machines are constantly
