The production of Spotify Car Thing is definitively stopped; Here’s what will happen to the units sold

Because Spotify’s Thing will no longer be manufactured. The streaming giant shared the decision just five months after the product launched.

The tech company first tested Car Thing on a small number of users in April 2021. After that, Spotify decided to officially launch its car accessory last February.

However, the music-streaming giant said things aren’t going exactly well for its vehicle’s dashboard.

For this reason, Spotify has decided to no longer manufacture new units.

Permanent cessation of production of Spotify Car Thing

According to the latest MacRumors report, Spotify has already spent $32 million developing Car Thing.

However, the audio streaming company said supply chain issues and product demand issues are affecting sales of this product.

“Based on several factors, including product demand and supply chain issues, we have decided to discontinue production of Car Thing units,” the Spotify spokesperson said.

As of press time, Car Thing units are still being sold by the tech company. He did not confirm when the production shutdown will actually begin.

For those who have already purchased the car dashboard, Spotify said there would be no problem, allowing you to keep the unit.

What will happen to the car units sold?

Tech Crunch said Car Thing units already sold to consumers will remain functional. Spotify has confirmed that it will still support the car dashboard.

The streaming giant added that this product allowed them to learn more about the importance of vehicles as a place for music.

At press time, Spotify said it will put more effort into its advertising business as it delivers record breaking revenue.

Apart from its advertising business, the streaming giant also said its podcasts also generate revenue, with more than 4.4 million active recordings on the platform.

Spotify added that MAUs for its podcasts grew substantially by double digits year-over-year. Apart from this, the content consumption rates also continue to rise.
