Tesla Giga Shanghai has produced 26,000 vehicles since production resumed: report

Tesla China may take some time to reach its pre-lockdown production levels, but it is getting there. Despite operating with only one shift since resuming vehicle production last month, Gigafactory Shanghai has been able to produce 26,000 vehicles.

The information was reported by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which posted a message on its official WeChat account. According to MIIT, more than 1,200 auto parts companies have also resumed work and production. This should help automakers like Tesla China to further increase production.

Shanghai is a crucial location for the Chinese auto market, with MIIT estimating that around 11% of the country’s auto production occurs in the city. Auto parts suppliers also operate facilities in Shanghai.

Gigafactory Shanghai’s production would likely only increase from then on. As reported by postings on China’s Douyin platform, Gigafactory Shanghai employees who will be working on Giga Shanghai’s second shift are now arriving on site. Similar to first-shift workers already at the factory, second-shift workers will temporarily live at Giga Giga Shanghai as part of the company’s “closed-loop” system.

Reports suggest Tesla is looking to keep Giga Shanghai workers in a closed-loop system until mid-June. It’s worth noting that Tesla isn’t the only company taking a closed-loop approach. Another automaker, General Motors, as well as suppliers like CATL, are also taking a closed-loop approach in some of their China-based facilities.

Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai halted production on March 28 as the city entered a gradual lockdown. Operations restarted on April 19, with 8,000 employees returning to work. Since then, Giga Shanghai has resumed vehicle exports, although an official at Shanghai’s Lingang New Area said the facility was still operating at around 45% capacity.
