Salina library closed after car accident in building

Salina’s library is closed after a woman crashes into the building and destroys almost everything inside.

She had a medical episode that caused her to collapse.

“It leads into this whole area. It’s a big mess,” Mayor Randall Plumlee said.

The Salina Library is a second home for many city kids.

“We’re not a quiet library,” Tammie Halbach said.

But now books are thrown from the shelves, furniture shattered and bricks cover the floor.

Library manager Tammie Halbach won’t hear the children’s chatter for a while.

“I didn’t expect a vehicle to be in my library and everything in it to be destroyed,” she said.

Mayor Randall Plumlee got the call Friday night and thought it was an April Fool’s joke.

He said a woman had a medical episode and drove off the road to the library.

This car managed to run off the road through one of those beams in the main part of the library, which made a big mess inside.

“She hit this pole, jumped over a flower bed, hit this and went through this huge opening,” Plumlee said.

This woman is fine, but Plumlee said the damage was done and now they are working to rebuild.

“It made me sick all weekend to know how hard they worked to make sure everything was perfect for the kids, and to see that is devastating,” Plumlee said.

He started a fundraiser to help pay for things like concrete poles outside to prevent this from happening and said the community is already stepping up to help.

“We’re hoping to make it better than it was, and it was great before,” Halbach said.
