PPG to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at its paints and coatings manufacturing site in Italy through investment in a high-efficiency power plant

QUATTORDIO, Italy–(BUSINESS WIRE)–PPG (NYSE:PPG) today announced the start-up of a high-efficiency power generation facility at its automotive paints and coatings manufacturing facility in Quattordio, Italy. The facility is expected to reduce energy costs by 13% and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of 10% per year.

Combining cold, heating and electricity, what is called trigeneration, the installation can operate with a combination of natural gas and 5% hydrogen. This can be increased to 20% hydrogen with minimal investment and up to 60% with other modifications. The new plant will operate with an estimated overall efficiency of around 75%.

The $2.8 million (€2.7 million) project is part of a partnership between PPG and Grastim, which is a developer of high-efficiency power generation solutions that include trigeneration and cogeneration . PPG previously completed a $2.1 million (€2 million) project using Grastim’s cogeneration technology at its Caivano, Italy site in 2021.

Under the terms of the power purchase agreement, Grastim is responsible for financing, licensing, constructing and operating the two power plants and will operate them for seven years.

“With soaring energy costs, it is essential to tap into any resource to reduce production costs and make factories more efficient,” said Baldo Pavolini, technical director of Grastim. “Using high-efficiency power generation solutions not only provides an economic benefit for our customers but also a sustainability benefit.

“PPG is committed to continuing our sustainability efforts and reducing our carbon emissions, and a key part of that is reducing our energy consumption,” said Silvia Ceratto, engineering and of PPG maintenance, Quattordio. “Our partnership with Grastim will help us advance our efforts and hopefully serve as a model for implementing similar systems globally.
