CITY OF BINGHAMTON (WBNG) – “It won a Pulitzer Prize. The writing is just amazing. Every moment of the play is in the play for a reason,” said director Samantha Rose as she reflects on the latest production to come. at the KNOW Theater ‘How I Learned to Drive’ hits the Broome County site this Friday.

“This piece is a woman’s voice and it really needs, you know, a woman like they said in the driver’s seat behind her,” the director said.

The main character goes by the nickname L’il Bit. Actress Anna Simek portrays the main role in the memory play.

“So it’s really my character going through the events of an abusive relationship with a family member, his uncle,” Simek said. “She’s the one reflecting on this relationship, the events around it, trying to make sense of what happened and who’s to blame, and trying to come out the other side and have a little control over his life.”

Joe Hoffmann will play Uncle Peck in the production, L’il Bit’s uncle. “Trying to get rid of everything I just did was something I was really unprepared for,” Hoffmann said.

The couple’s complex relationship touches on some rather taboo subjects. “It’s going to spark some interesting conversations and I think it’s going to create a lot of awareness about how things like this happen and how we can be more mindful of them,” Hoffmann said.

“For those who may have had something like the L’il Bit experience first hand or for those who know or love someone who has been through what L’il Bit has been through, I hope seeing her story and seeing her take control of her story gives them some kind of comfort and hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” the director said.
