How Darkseid caused the creation of the Justice League twice before the DCEU

0

Today we take a look at how Darkseid led to the creation of the Justice League in two different versions of the DC continuity.

This is “Gonna Change My Way of Thinking”, an article highlighting notable examples of retcons that do not fall within the scope of Abandoned and forsaken, which is specifically about stories that outright “turn around” older stories. There are many examples of “retroactive continuity” that do not actively abandon the works of the past (especially cases where the overall continuity has been reset). Some of them are minor, some of them are major, all of them are interesting enough to me that I think they are worth writing.

Interestingly, for one of the Justice League’s greatest enemies, Darkseid was at least indirectly responsible for forming the League in at least two different continuities, and that doesn’t even count the fact that he was the driving force behind the League’s formation in Zack. Snyder’s Justice League!

So let’s take a look …

DARKSEID FIRST BREAKS THE LEAGUE OF JUSTICE

The very concept of the 1986-87 crossover event, Captions, was that Darkseid decided to play with Earth and her heroes by turning the inhabitants of the planet against its own protectors, as seen here in Captions # 1 (by John Ostrander, Len Wein, John Byrne and Karl Kesel) …

One of Darkseid’s agents, Glorious Godfrey, established himself as a famous psychologist (in a riff on Fredric Wertham) and turned the people of Earth into superheroes through carefully harnessed propaganda and mentoring heroes. for deaths they did not cause …

It was soon to the point where Batman and Robin are attacked by a mob when they show up to stop a crime …

(By the way, I never bought this particular scene. Batman never leaves Robin in this situation, even with Gordon’s assurances that his men will protect Robin).

Things get complicated when President Ronald Reagan signs an executive order declaring martial law and banning superheroes …

In Justice League of America # 258 (by JM DeMatteis, Luke McDonnell and Bob Smith), Martian Manhunter reacts to the President’s order by dissolving the Justice League …

Unfortunately, despite the League’s technical disbandment, former Justice League nemesis Professor Ivo still attacks the remaining team members with special androids and at the end of # 258 one of the androids murders Vibe …

Another android later murders Steel, leaving only Martian Manhunter and Vixen on the then current Justice League roster (Gyspy had returned to his family and Elongated Man had taken a long journey with his wife). They beat Ivo and Martian Manhuntr is forced to reform the League …

Vixen tells him that if he wants to do it, he will have to do it himself …

The problem ends when Manhunter responds to an alert.

DC UNIVERSE LEGENDS FORGE A NEW JUSTICE LEAGUE AT THE CHALLENGE OF DARKSEID

More in Captions, things are getting worse and worse for the heroes of the DC Universe, but in Captions # 5, when Godfrey organized a rally in Washington DC …

Doctor Fate has assembled a collection of current superheroes to fight back …

In the last issue of the series, Martian Manhunter joins the other heroes …

Darkseid stops playing and outright launches an invasion of Earth with Parademons and Hounds of War …

Wonder Woman, who was ostensibly a new hero at this point, made her debut in “Man’s World” among the other heroes …

After Martian Manhunter saves President Reagan’s life, the president revokes his executive order banning superheroes (you mean, a politician changed his mind after being personally affected by a policy? Why, I never !) …

Now that Darkseid’s forces are defeated, Doctor Fate suggests that the heroes who showed up should all form a new superhero squad, and they agree (well, Flash, Changeling, and Wonder Woman don’t. ) and Blue Beetle suggests that the name of the new team should be the Justice League …

HOW DID THE LEAGUE FOR JUSTICE FORM IN THE NEW 52?

About 25 years later, Justice League # 1 (by Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, and Alex Sinclair) launched (the very first comic book released as part of DC’s new continuity reboot known as New 52), and this all-new super continuity -hero opened with Green Lantern meeting Batman when an alien device appears in Gotham City …

The two heroes suspect one of the only aliens they know, Superman, and he shows up and fights them a bit, thinking they wanted to have him for some reason. In the fight, Green Lantern calls out his friend and fellow hero, the Flash, and after a brief 3-way fight against Superman, the four heroes then all decide to team up …

They are then joined by Wonder Woman, newly arrived in the world of men …

and Aquaman, who is not happy that his kingdom is also being invaded by the creatures of Darkseid …

One of the alien devices, called Mother Boxes, merged with an injured young man named Victor Stone to transform him into a Cyborg-like being (he appropriately takes the name Cyborg). Stone agrees to help others …

And they soon see that Darkseid is there …

After the superheroes fight against Darkseid’s attempted invasion of Earth, the heroes decide to stick together as the Justice League. This is, of course, the same basic Justice League plot of Zack Snyder, which was based on that first New 52 story of the formation of the Justice League (the only difference is that Green Lantern is not yet a part of the DCEU Justice League).

It’s pretty funny, so in two different continuities Darkseid’s actions formed the creation of two different Major Justice Leagues! Talk about having unintended consequences for your actions! The most evil guy has helped form the Justice League twice (although, to be fair, he also closed a Justice League, so he’s more 1-2 than 0-2).

Okay, friends, feel free to suggest more examples of this stuff! The obscure, the famous, whatever! Send your suggestions to [email protected]!
