Film and TV production returned to Cambridge in a big way last year

After the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic slowed film and television production at Cambridge in 2020, things have started to rebound in 2021.

Staff presented a report to City Council on Tuesday night about filming in the area over the past two years, as it has been delayed by the pandemic.

In 2020, there were just 20 days of filming in the city with an estimated economic impact of $276,000, which follows a record year in 2019, when there were 61 days of filming with an estimated impact to $1,025,300 for the local economy. .

The report says Cambridge recorded a record 75 days of local filming despite the suspension of film license issuances from January to June, although some of that came from a Food Network show recording two seasons at a studio of the region.

“Cambridge is an incredible backdrop for so many film projects, with incredible views and a sense of community like no other,” said Mayor Kathryn McGarry.

“With three unique core areas and natural landscapes, Cambridge has a lot to offer the creative industry, and it adds to our overall economic well-being.”

The first series to be filmed in the region last year was Amazon’s main show Jack Reachwhich debuted on the streaming service last month.

“Film projects are bringing investment into the city that we might not otherwise see,” said James Goodram, director of economic development. “Industry professionals stay at our hotels, support our local businesses and promote our community to a global audience. As the creative sector grows in the province, we have the opportunity to use location filming as a catalyst for longer-term workforce development programs and jobs in the arts. .

Jack Reach joins a long list of shows that have filmed in the city over the past two years, including The Handmaid’s Tale, Murdoch Mysteries, The Odd Squad and Rugged Boys.

It looks like the city is heading back to 2022 fast, as last week it announced that Hello Strangera new movie starring Simu Liu, Jordana Brewster and Sam Worthington is reportedly filming in the city this week.
