LAKE CITY, Fla. (WCJB) – Florida Gateway College marks its 75th anniversary with the opening of a new STEM building.

“Fifteen months and three weeks later. The building will be built on time and on budget,” said FGC President Lawrence Barrett. “It’s a phenomenal building, as you can see.”

Florida Gateway College President Lawrence Barrett said he wants to create a pathway for STEM students.

The project began in 2016 with a budget of over $12 million. Barrett tells TV20 that the renovations have been a long time coming.

“And we are really about 55% of our student body who still come here on campus, which is very important. And for science and math, it’s important that instead of this online learning environment, they can actually see, smell and touch things,” Barrett said. “So we’re so excited about this building.”

The new building comes years after the last renovation in 1975. The shared staff will include several laboratories, study areas, new technologies and equipment.

The grand opening of Florida Gateway College STEM will take place tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.

Also performing in Lake City, Lake City-based cafe owners Ellianos announced the opening of a new store in Jacksonville.

“We love Ellianos, the #1 cafe around!” said customer Heather Le.

It would be their 23rd drive-thru location for the growing cafe chain. Coffee lovers are happy to hear that more places will be in the area.

“I’m excited, more places when we travel, we can stop there too,” Le said. Over the past year, the coffee brand has seen growth in Florida, Georgia and other states.
