PARKERSBURG – Thinking about taking part in the annual Sour Mash Open this year?

Better hurry because there are less than a handful of the 36 spots left for four-man teams, according to Stacy DeCicco, executive director of the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley, organizer of the region’s oldest golf tournament. which became a Centraide Flagship Event last year.

“The registration was amazing,” she says.

United Way has assumed the organization of the Parkersburg Rotary Club’s Sour Mash in 2021, the 50th anniversary of the tournament. United Way raised more than $60,000 last year from the tournament for the agency and the programs and organizations it supports, DeCicco said.

The Sour Mash tournament will take place on Monday July 11 at the Parkersburg Country Club in Vienna. Shotgun departure is at 10 a.m.

Tournament fees include green fees, cart, gift, continental breakfast, lunch, beverages, receipt of awards and chances to win other prizes. The cost is $200 per player or $750 for a team of four

The 51st edition of the tournament will see several changes, DeCicco said.

In recent years, LPGA Tour pro Brittany Lincicome has been the star of golf. Lincicome, among the longest hitters on the women’s tour, is unavailable this year, DeCicco said.

“His schedule did not match ours this year,” DeCicco said.

Instead, Josh Kelley, an entertainer from New Jersey, will host the tournament, she said. Kelley will provide exposure before the shotgun begins and play in the tournament, DeCicco said.

“So we’re bringing it in this year,” she says.

Kelley’s show is at 9 a.m.

In keeping with Sour Mash tradition, options include 2 best 4 clean balls / play your own ball or scramble format.

This year’s tournament will be dedicated to Pat Sr. and Judy Minnite of PM Co. Minnites are community philanthropists.

“Judy has been a really pivotal part of the family’s success,” DeCicco said.

Also new to the 2022 Sour Mash will include the Sour Mash Bash the previous Sunday night at the country club, DeCicco said. Entertainment for the party will be released later, she said.

“It’s going to be awesome,” she says.
