Eppendorf increases production of bioreactors in Germany



Steady growth in demand for its bioreactor systems has led Eppendorf to expand its site in Jülich, Germany, with the addition of a 3,600 m² facility.

The final phase of construction of the three-story building began last week. Once operational, it will more than double the production space and increase production capacity by 20% at the Eppendorf site, located 30 km west of Cologne.

“The new building offers significantly increased production space for manufacturing bioprocess controllers with corresponding accessories,” said a spokesperson for the bioprocess supplier. “In addition, device control software is developed and implemented there.”

Among the bioprocess technologies manufactured in Jülich are the DASbox 2.0 and DASGIP bioreactor systems. The former is a mini-bioreactor system intended for small work volumes in research and early process development projects, while the latter are designed to provide optimal bioprocess performance in benchtop configurations.

According to the spokesperson, the demand for such systems has been steadily growing worldwide.

“With the extension of the Jülich site and the new multifunctional building for 12.5 million euros [$12.5 million], we respond to this continuous development. The construction project is a commitment to the site and a sustainable safeguard of our production on site. Eppendorf’s growing bioprocessing business will also create more jobs.

They added that while demand for COVID-19 related products is down, it is the pandemic that has further spurred expansion as it has shown how much needed Eppendorf and its products are needed.

“This will continue to be the case in the future!” With the new building and the increased capacity, we are strengthening Eppendorf and our Bioprocess business.
