The University of Eastern New Mexico at Roswell will celebrate the renovation of the Automotive Technology and Welding Center on Wednesday, April 13.

The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 78 University Blvd. at 3 p.m., followed by tours of the building. The ceremony will feature several speakers, including Tim Jennings, the newly elected mayor of Roswell. A meeting of the Community College Board of Trustees is scheduled for 4 p.m.

AWTC’s renovation was funded by a $3 million general obligation bond issue approved by voters in 2018 and $2.9 million in campus capital reserve funds. The remodeled facility allows more automotive and welding students to be trained in a modern and improved learning environment using state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

Students will begin classes at the 34,910 square foot facility when the fall semester begins Aug. 15. Currently, welding technology students attend classes in a temporary workshop behind the new on-campus maintenance building. Automotive technology students train in a rented off-campus facility.

“We are thrilled to welcome visitors and students to the newly redesigned and renovated facilities,” said ENMU-Roswell President Shawn Powell. “Our students and instructors are patiently awaiting the building’s completion and looking forward to returning to this enhanced training space. Of course, we also couldn’t have done this project without the support of our community and the voters who approved GO Bond funding.
