Terrorism is a political phenomenon created by some Western political regimes and then attached to Judaism, Christianity and Islam for political gains and purposes, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in Egypt, Ahmed El- Tayyeb.
Speaking at a meeting with a delegation from the UK’s Royal College of Defense Studies, Al-Tayyeb said his institution had included counter-terrorism and counter-radicalism subjects in its curricula.
Al-Azhar is the largest Sunni Islamic learning institution in the world.
“For decades, the culture of Al-Azhar has been based on educating its students with respect for different opinions,” the Islamic cleric stressed.
He pointed out that Al-Azhar established the so-called Egyptian Family House with the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church in 2011, with the aim of “promoting good relations between Muslims and Christians in Egypt”.
For their part, the British delegates said that the meeting of the main religious leaders “embodied the truth of the heavenly religions while representing a blocking wall against any attempt to brainwash people”.
