Creating a Tabletop Countywide Ambulance Service for Mahoning County


BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Private ambulance companies and fire departments are struggling to provide emergency medical services. This has been a growing problem for years.

On Thursday, Boardman Township Administrator Jason Loree spoke to Mahoning County Commissioners asking for their help in establishing a county-wide ambulance service.

“Everyone is throwing money at it and it doesn’t seem to be working as well as it could be,” he said.

Just this week, Youngstown City Council members refused a request from AMR Ambulance to use US bailout money to subsidize their services. Business leaders said they couldn’t make ends meet relying on Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements and were still handling every call they received.

“These companies need help. They don’t need extra charges,” Boardman Fire Chief Mark Pitzer said.

The same is happening for fire departments like Canfield, where a levy is on the ballot next week to support its services.

Boardman residents considered the idea of ​​establishing a fire department ambulance, which would cost more than $1 million a year.

“It’s going to take a regional effort and approach. We can start, but we have to look for long-term solutions,” Pitzer said.

The commissioners have promised to bring everyone concerned together.

“We’re going to get lawmakers involved. I mean, there are ways they can help us in this area,” Mahoning County Commissioner Carol Righetti said.
