Cops say Brewerton man set building on fire trying to get warm



A Brewerton man allegedly broke into a building and set it on fire while trying to get warm

An Onondaga County man is under arrest for the second time in a week.

Kevin J. Somers, a 32-year-old man from Brewerton, New York, faces multiple charges after authorities say he illegally entered an abandoned gas station and, after setting a fire to stay warm , had set fire to the building.

According to a written statement from the New York State Police (NYSP), Somers entered the “gas station located at 2949 State Route 49 in the town of West Monroe, [in] Oswego County, between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. “Thursday, September 29, 2022. The NYSP says that “he intentionally started a fire to stay warm and recklessly set the entire structure on fire.”

Emergency responders from multiple agencies worked on the fire. In addition to the New York State Police, the West Monroe Fire Department, the Brewerton Fire Department, the Central Square Fire Department, the Cleveland Fire Department, the Constantia Fire, Mexico Fire Department and Menter Ambulance were on the scene.

Police said: “Firefighters determined the building was a total loss.”

Somers was arrested without incident and taken to the Oswego County Public Safety Building to await arraignment.

He now faces the following charges:

  • Third degree burglary, a class D felony
  • Fourth degree arson, a class E felony

No other injuries were reported.

Second man arrested in a week

Earlier in the week, Somers was arrested in connection with an accident on I-81 in Cicero, New York, in which he allegedly became unruly while a passenger in a car. The car crashed and the driver, Dawn M. Edwards, 52, was hospitalized.

Somers, who had been extracted from the car, was charged on September 24, 2022 and later released.
