Class 3 girl from Bhubaneswar writes Ramayan in English

Neither Gopal Krushna Sahu nor his wife Sharmistha Patnaik ever imagined in their wildest dreams that their 8-year-old daughter, Osheen, would be able to do what even the learned elite would think twice about trying.

Osheen, a Class 3 student at a private school in Bhubaneswar, has become a new sensation in Odisha due to her larger than life creation in which she wrote the epic Ramayan all by herself in English.

Using his enviable creative flair, Osheen wrote two “Kands” – Bala Kand and Ayodhya Kand from the first chapter (Pratham Khand) of the famous epic.
And to his delight, e-marketplace giant Amazon has agreed to sell the book, saying it’s good enough to publish.

Osheen’s parents, who are now on cloud nine after his achievement, say his penchant for Ramayan began during the COVID-induced lockdown when Doordarshan, the national broadcaster, aired a rerun of the epic on television.

As expected, the epic series skyrocketed DD’s TV Rating Points (TRPs) and also helped instill writing skills in little Osheen.

Initially, she wrote down everything she heard on television during the telecast. But soon, she developed painting skills and drew Ramayan characters at the end of each episode as a summary.

Speaking to OTV, Osheen said, “I am so happy to have published a book for the first time in my life and it is none other than the Ramayan.”
Gopal Krushna, his father was more than happy to help his child correct a few grammatical errors here and there. But the overall writing was done only by the little girl.

“I am happy that she chose Ramayan. More than anything, she learned family values, behavior towards elders by watching Ramayan,” said Gopal Krushna.

Although there are a number of Ramayan editions published in many languages including English, but Osheen’s has images depicting each character and their deed which makes it more appealing to children.
