Chief Justice Gesmundo welcomes the creation of the Office of Judicial Marshals

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo welcomes the enactment of Republic Act 11691 or the Judicial Marshals Act, saying the new law will “protect and safeguard the nation’s judicial system.”

Under RA11691, the Office of Judicial Marshals will be created. Its primary responsibility is the security, safety and protection of members, officials, staff and property of the judiciary, including the integrity of the courts and its procedures.

The new law “will be of great help not only to the Supreme Court, but also to the entire judiciary, ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of justice.”

The Office of Judicial Marshals will be an independent battalion-sized armed unit.

Then, Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta advocated for the creation of this office when he took office to protect members and officers of the judiciary.

The country has more than 2,600 courts nationwide. From 1999 to 2017, there are already 31 active judges killed. From 2016 to 2021, five judges and an associate judge of the Court of Appeal have been killed.

“Indeed, the establishment of RA 11691 will not only secure, protect and safeguard the judiciary, but will also boost the morale of its members, officials and staff at a time when threats against judges and murders of judges are feared. ‘lawyers,’” Gesmundo said.

Last February, Gesmundo met with U.S. Embassy officials and sought assistance from the U.S. government for the operationalization of the Office of Judicial Marshals, specifically for the establishment of the Judicial Marshals Academy.

The Supreme Court hopes to model the country’s Office of the Judiciary Marshals on that of the United States.

According to its website, the US Marshals Service was the first federal law enforcement agency in 1789 and is the enforcement arm of the federal courts, involved in virtually all federal law enforcement initiatives. law.

The functions of the U.S. Marshals Service include protecting federal justice, apprehending federal fugitives, managing and selling seized property acquired by criminals through unlawful activity, housing and transporting federal prisoners and managing the witness safety program. Marshals also provide assistance in locating and apprehending their most violent fugitives.
