Chakwera urges countries to invest in job-creating sectors

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera urged countries to invest in sectors that create jobs, generate wealth and overcome deficits.

Dr Chakwera said this at the UN Global Accelerator Program Forum on Jobs and Social Protection on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, USA.

The President said high borrowing costs, the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change-induced shocks are some of the challenges Malawi faces in meeting the goals.

The President therefore called on world leaders to support Malawi by making capital accessible and affordable while building the capacity of local institutions and individuals.

Sitting next to Dr Chakwera, President of the African Development Bank, Dr Akinwumu Adesina said that empowering young people across the capital is necessary for African countries to develop.

He therefore challenged the delegates at the meeting to replicate the African Development Bank’s model of investment banks for youth entrepreneurship in their countries as a means of empowering youth for development.

The UN Global Accelerator for Jobs and Social Protection Agenda calls on Member States to develop policies that create decent jobs and view social protection as a human right. The accelerator is for transitions and aims to create more than 2 billion decent jobs worldwide by 2030.
