Building, street works planned for Corridor Plaza this year | News, Sports, Jobs

While the $17 million granted Friday is key to the development of the plaza and Corridor Plaza pavilion, construction on those elements won’t begin right away.

However, there will be further construction and the start of new businesses on the site this year, according to the developer and city officials.

A strip mall on the south side of 29th Street of the site is under construction and is expected to be completed in late summer. Two businesses are expected to open there: a restaurant called Teriyaki Madness and a laundromat called Clean Laundry. There will be room for two or three other businesses in the strip mall.

The former Younkers wing of the mall is being renovated to accommodate additional businesses.

A new section of 27th Street, which will run north to Fifth Avenue South, will be built this year, according to Chad Schaeffer, the city’s director of development.

Drivers meandering through orange barrels along Fifth Avenue South near Corridor Plaza are already seeing some of this 27th Street work. Schaeffer said traffic restrictions are in place so utility work can be done to prepare for the extension of water lines north under the new street.
