Venus Aerospacea startup developing both hypersonic drones and large-scale hypersonic passenger aircraft, has obtained liquid fuels storable at room temperature to operate in a rotary detonation rocket motor (RDRE).

Detonation engines provide higher performance than a typical rocket engine, allowing vehicles to go faster and farther than existing systems on the same amount of fuel. Rotary detonation allows supersonic combustion to occur continuously inside the engine, and the video shows the detonation wave moving around the engine at supersonic speeds.

Engine tests was completed at Venus Aerospace Headquarters, located in Spaceport Houston, culminating 3 months of effort. The test rig was designed and built over 12 months, and all within 18 months of the company moving from California to Houston, Texas.

Proving this technology is a crucial step in bringing high-speed, reusable commercial travel to the public.

Only a few companies and academic institutions have achieved rotary detonation, and Venus Aerospace is the first company to demonstrate this particular combination of room-temperature storable propellants, which will allow hypersonic flights to be farther, faster and more often. . “We now have both the technical knowledge and the engineering to fully move into the next stages of development and flight testing,” said Dr. Andrew Duggleby, CTO and co-founder of Venus Aerospace. “In parallel, we have advanced our aerodynamics, avionics and heat management technologies. Now is the time to start putting all the pieces together, first with our small Mach 5 drone, and eventually the Mach 9 stargazerour full-scale passenger aircraft, which will have a dual purpose for commercial and military applications,” says Duggleby.

Venus will begin hypersonic RDRE flight testing with a 20-foot drone to support both national security and internal technology development. The planned Venus Stargazer jetliner is designed to connect cities more than 5,000 miles apart in less than an hour.
