New MESA Model: A Framework for Smarter Manufacturing

April 22, 2022 – MESA International announces the release of a new MESA Model: A Framework for Smarter Manufacturing. The new model aims to help define the current and future landscape of “smart” manufacturing and production. It considers the concepts that have always been part of manufacturing and production, but dives deep into how these concepts are made “intelligent” by integrating related functions and incorporating new or advanced technologies.

The MESA smart manufacturing model incorporates three related concepts: lifecycles, cross-lifecycle threads, and enabling technologies. Lifecycles represent the business processes and value streams necessary for manufacturing that need to be optimized. Lifecycles apply to all manufacturing and production companies, although they may vary in their application across different industries or between companies with different levels of maturity. Lifecycle threads allow functions to be linked across different lifecycles to achieve specific goals and ensure that lifecycles operate cohesively rather than independently. The enabling technologies listed in the model are just a few examples of modern technologies that enable desired smart manufacturing outcomes. For the full written account, visit this site.

MESA has released various models over the years that span the manufacturing execution and operations space, as well as enterprise-level strategic initiatives and business operations. Past MESA designs have been referenced in numerous publications, manuals and RFPs.

MESA Knowledge Committee Chair, Khris Kammer, said of the new model, “For many years, the industry has looked to MESA as a trusted source of actionable tools and guidance to maximize manufacturing and production operations through the use of software technology. In fact, it’s been almost three decades since MESA was created, and in that time we’ve released three (now four) MESA models. Over these years, MESA models have been referenced in thousands of manuals, articles and technical journals. They have also been employed by manufacturers, producers and vendors to enable a common vocabulary and structure for discussions as solutions are designed and implemented. The new MESA model will serve as the foundation for ongoing efforts to develop additional written work, webinars, and other educational materials at MESA, and we expect it to be used by countless other people and organizations alike. way that previous models were referenced. We thank the many volunteers who contributed to the development of this template, and we hope others will join us in adding additional content and context.

MESA is launching this new model on the eve of its 30th anniversary.
