Dog eat Dog is the first film by the director from Cali Carlos Moreno, based on the story Los Malditos written by the co scriptwriter of the film, Alonso Torres, a story that had 6 preliminary versions until it became a script of Black Humor, greed, revenge, witchcraft and disloyalty.Shot in 6 weeks in real scenarios in Cali and its surroundings, Carlos Moreno found the title of the film inspired in a famous performance by Henry Fiol, of the song ‘Ahora me da pena’, which says: “Yo nací en Nueva York, en el condado de Manhattan, donde perro come perro y por un peso te matan” (I was born in New York, Manhattan County, where dog eats dog and you get killed for a penny).
Paradoxically, he listened to this song in one of the many meetings with Alonso Torres, sitting at the Bodega Cubana, a bar in Cali where Torres is the disc jockey and administrator, and where they have also hanged out sharing son music and lyrics by Héctor Lavoe, Willie Colón, Ray Barreto and Richie Rey, among other.
“Then, I decided that the film will be called Dog eat Dog, because this song, original by Francisco Repilao (Compay Segundo), presents the ‘dramatic motive’, of the story. It talks about the mortal sin of our species: to exterminate itself. It contains the shameful things you find in human nature”, says Moreno.
Resides filmmaking, music has been the biggest living in the career of the director from Cali. His first approach to the “seventh art” was through music and he considers that it is one of his biggest frustrations, as hi admits it “I am a disabled musician, and no matter how hard I tried, I never had talent and perhaps that is why I make films”.
The music of the film plays a leading role in the setting and as a connecting thread of the story. Carlos Moreno searched for new sounds, with short and catchy verses that, like a cadence, draw the dynamics and influence the development of the film. His purpose was always to reflect the thematic of the film through street songs, with a very local sound and using drums and native instruments.
The main song of Dog eat Dog is an original song composed for the film by Superlitio, the Rock band from Cali, nominated to the Grammy Awards to Best New Artist, in 2004, and in some of its verses it says: El que la hace la paga, y en la calle no se escapa / que te vienen buscando, perro come perro / mira que te tienen, amarrado y rezao / (He who does it, pays for it, and he won’t escape in the street/ they’re looking for you, dog eats dog/ they have got you, tied up and cursed).
Las Reglas is another original song by the band Malalma, composed because the director Carlos Moreno asked for it. The mix between electronic music and the flavor of the Afro Colombian sound, have as a result an urban song, a hot song where humor is also reflected, a fundamental characteristic of the film.
Other Colombian bands like La 33, Mojarra Eléctrica and Sultana are part of the sound track of Dog eat Dog.
